What's different about working in Portsmouth
City gardens ask for different work to the ones out in the villages. Space is usually tight, access is often through the house or a narrow side alley, and the job is more likely to be a courtyard laid properly, a small patio, or a boundary rebuilt between terraces than a full garden scheme. That suits us: awkward access and terraced houses are ordinary work here, and we'll take on a small job that others won't bother with. North of the city it changes again. Cosham, Drayton and Farlington sit under Portsdown Hill, so gardens there often step up or down, and the answer is levels, steps and retaining walls rather than one flat lawn.
Planning and dropped kerbs in Portsmouth
Portsmouth is a unitary council, so the city council handles planning and the roads. Dropped kerbs go through its highway contractor, Colas: you can use a private contractor to build the crossing, but Colas has to approve the work on the public highway. In parts of Southsea there are also Article 4 directions in the conservation areas, which take away rights you'd normally have. In those streets, planning permission is needed to put a hard standing in a front garden, and to alter or take down a front boundary wall, gate or railing. We check before we quote.
