Groundworks & Concrete Bases in Waterlooville & Portsmouth
Free site visit and quote · We reply within 24 hours
Groundworks and concrete bases across Waterlooville, Portsmouth and the surrounding Hampshire area. The unglamorous work that everything else sits on: dug, levelled and poured properly.
On this page: what groundworks actually covers, and how we quote it. Call 07813 073814 or send us photos with the quote form.
Shed bases, garden room bases, greenhouse slabs and hardstandings: excavated, shuttered, reinforced where needed and poured to a level finish.
We also take on groundworks for larger projects, including footings and site preparation for extensions and garden buildings.
Spoil and waste are carted away, and the surrounding area is reinstated so the new base is the only evidence we were there.

How do you quote a concrete base?
Fixed, from photos or a quick look, and the quote depends on access and what's there now more than the slab itself. A base cut into a slope or replacing an old one takes more work than the same slab on clear, level ground.
Every base is excavated, shuttered, reinforced where needed and poured to a level finish, with the spoil taken away as part of the job.
What does a garden room base need that a shed base doesn't?
More strength and more accuracy. A garden room is heavier than a shed, usually insulated, and the maker will specify the base size, thickness and levels it needs, so we build to the manufacturer's base spec rather than guessing.
Get the base spec from your garden room supplier before you book anyone. We'll quote against it directly, and the room turns up to a base that fits.
Do you do footings and foundations?
Yes. For extension footings we work to your building control requirements, and trenches are dug, inspected and poured in the right order.
It's the same discipline as our smaller bases, with more paperwork, and the same team handles the whole run from dig to pour.
What do groundworks actually include?
Groundworks is everything that happens to the ground before anything is built on it: excavation, levelling and grading, compacted sub-bases, concrete slabs and footings, and drainage. If it involves a digger, a trench or a pour, it's groundworks.
At KCO that means one team handles the dig, the base and whatever sits on top, whether that's a shed, a patio or a driveway. No handover between a groundworker and a builder, because they're the same people.
Can you level a sloping garden?
Yes. The size of the job depends almost entirely on how much soil has to move and whether the new levels need retaining, which is why levelling is quoted from a look at the garden rather than a rate card.
Sloping gardens usually level in steps rather than one plane: terraces held by sleeper or block retaining, which we build as part of the job.
Do you do drainage?
Yes. Channels, gullies and soakaways to keep water moving off hard surfaces and away from buildings, designed into the job at the quote stage rather than bolted on after a puddle appears.
Where a soakaway is genuinely needed, we build it into the job. Most gardens just need the right falls, and we'll tell you honestly which yours is.
When does a base need reinforcement?
When the load calls for it: garden rooms, workshops with machinery, and hardstandings that carry vehicles get mesh or rebar, while a light garden shed usually doesn't. Mesh and rebar where the job calls for it, not where it doesn't.
Concrete strength is matched to the job the same way, because paying for strength you don't need is money in the ground.
