Patio Laying & Paving in Waterlooville & Portsmouth
Free site visit and quote · We reply within 24 hours
Patio laying and paving across Waterlooville, Portsmouth and the surrounding Hampshire area: level, well-drained patios, paths and seating areas that turn a garden into an extra room.
On this page: how the materials compare, and what should be underneath a patio that lasts. Call 07813 073814 or send us photos with the quote form.
Like our driveways, every patio starts below the surface: proper excavation, a compacted sub-base and a full mortar bed under every slab, not just dabs.
We work with a wide range of slabs, setts and natural stone, and can add steps, low walls and edging to deal with sloping gardens and split levels.
The job is finished with clean, consistent pointing and the whole area left washed down and ready to enjoy.

How do you quote a patio?
Fixed, from a free look at the garden: ground, access and material decide the work, so we quote the finished patio with groundwork and pointing included, and there's nothing to add up afterwards.
Depending on the job, we price by the square metre or with a day rate, and we agree the price with you before we start. If the ground turns up something unexpected, we talk it through with you before going any further.
Porcelain, sandstone or concrete slabs: which is best?
Concrete slabs are the budget-friendly workhorse, Indian sandstone gives natural variation, and porcelain is the low-maintenance, non-slip choice that's taken over modern gardens.
All three want the same thing underneath, and that matters more than the slab. A well-laid concrete slab patio outlasts a badly laid porcelain one.
What should be under a good patio?
A compacted sub-base and a full mortar bed under every slab, not five dabs of mortar and hope. Dab-laid slabs rock loose, drum underfoot and let water sit underneath, which is where staining and frost damage start.
The ground preparation is the part of the job we won't cut. The groundworks rule applies to patios too: what's underneath decides how it looks in five years.
How long does laying a patio take?
Guide timings run 1 to 2 days for a 10 square metre patio, 2 to 4 days for 20 square metres, and 4 to 7 for larger or more complex jobs with steps and levels (BookaBuilderUK).
Tight access adds time rather than cost surprises: everything barrowed through a terrace house in Portsmouth just takes more trips. We build that into the quote, not the excuse list.
Can you repair or repoint an existing patio?
Yes. Repointing, relaying rocking slabs and extending an existing patio are all normal jobs for us, and often better value than starting again.
If the base underneath has failed, we'll tell you honestly, because repointing a patio that's moving is money down the joints.
Do patios need drainage?
Every patio needs the right falls, laid so rain runs away from the house rather than pooling against it. Most gardens don't need more than that; where one genuinely does, we design a soakaway into the job.
It's part of how the patio is designed at the quote stage, not an extra bolted on later.
